BIOGRAPHY

Lo-Coco studied medicine in Pisa and, in 1981, he moved to the Sapienza University of Rome, where he worked under the direction of Professor Franco Mandelli. Since 2005, he has been Professor of Haematology at the Tor Vergata University in Rome, where headed the laboratory of Onco-Haematology until 2019.

Professor Lo-Coco was a renowned expert in the field of myeloid malignancies, particularly AML, as evidenced by his prolific publication record of over 400 scientific papers. He held prominent positions in national and international scientific societies, and his contributions have been recognised with several international awards, including the AIRC-FIRC Guido Venosta Award in 2016 and the Jose' Carreras Award in 2018. Professor Lo-Coco's name will forever be associated with APL, as he played a pivotal role in the first description of the molecular pathogenesis of the disease. He was instrumental in designing and coordinating landmark clinical trials that have contributed significantly to the management of APL today.
