BIOGRAPHY
No one else will ever challenge all what Emmanuel van der Schueren accomplished in less than 20 years for the progress of radiotherapy and more generally to improve the interaction of all oncology disciplines in all aspects of education, research and practice. A Belgian citizen, son of a Leuven radiologist, he completed his training, at Stanford University with Henry Kaplan. Back in Europe in the late 70s, he worked a few years with Klaas Breur in Amsterdam and was then appointed to the chair of radiotherapy at the University of Leuven. From there on, he was the driving force to create novel cooperative groups (ESTRO, FECS), strengthen and foster cooperation between existing European oncology organizations: EORTC, ESMO, ESSO, GEC, EACR and research groups in biology and physics. His European editorial achievements are still among the most influential today: “Radiotherapy and Oncology”, “The European Journal of Cancer”. Outstanding team manager, he was initially responsible for the organization of annual meetings of ESTRO and FECS. He created in Leuven a dedicated administrative team who accomplished a fantastic job in favor of European oncology. Manu’s pupils and collaborators contributed to the fame of the “Leuven school”: Among them, Walter van den Bogaert, Jan-Willem Leer, Jan van Dam, Bert Van der Kogel, Pierre Scalliet, Jacques Bernier, Karin Haustermans and many more… Andrée Dutreix and Jack Fowler joined the Leuven group for a few years.
