BIOGRAPHY

Nicholas E. Day, CBE was Professor of Epidemiology at the University of Cambridge. His statement, “A reduction in breast cancer mortality can occur only after a significant decrease in advanced cancers” laid the foundation for assessing population cancer screening trials using early, reliable surrogate measures. He was invited by the Swedish National Board of Health as an external expert to evaluate the results of the Swedish Two-County Trial. He also developed the methodology for trial closure with the purpose of accomplishing a balance of breast cancer incidence between the invited and the control group. He continued advising the leaders of the trial and participated in describing important parameters useful for future research. He sent his best student, Stephen W. Duffy, who became the chief biostatistician of the SOSSEG research group for nearly four decades.
