Professor László Tabár, MD, PhD, was invited by the Kopparberg County Council to lead the Kopparberg (W) arm of the Two-County Swedish randomized controlled trial, which he has done since 1977. He organized population-based mammography screening in a large but sparsely populated county using mobile units. He began the prospective data collection for the trial period and extended it to include all breast cancer patients during the service screening era, for a period of nearly five decades. He established the SOSSEG research group in 1986, bringing team members to the Department of Mammography, Sweden for biannual, week-long research workshops, resulting in more than 150 peer-reviewed research articles. Tabár investigated the importance of imaging biomarkers by correlating these with large format thin and thick section histopathology and long-term patient outcome. Focusing attention upon the earliest phase of breast cancers provided the basis for determining the site of tumor origin. The five-decade-long collaboration with Professor Peter B. Dean, MD, PhD, resulted in fifteen textbooks and numerous articles and book chapters on histopathologic-mammographic correlation of early breast cancers. Under Tabár’s leadership the Department of Mammography trained the screening radiologists and radiology technologists providing mammography screening services to 40% of Sweden’s population. Professor Tabár has provided ACCME teaching courses from 1986 to 2020, reaching more than 20,000 physicians and radiology technologists.
