Harald Zur Hausen
BIOGRAPHY
Harald Zur Hausen was a German virologist, Scientific director and chairman of the German Cancer Research Center in Heidelberg. In the early 1980s, he first demonstrated the link between Human Papilloma Virus genital infections and cancers of the uterine cervix, opening the way to the demonstration of the role of HPV in other cancer sites such as head and neck and anal cancers. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine in 2008. On the above picture Harald Zur Hausen proudly presents the ECOO 7 research award on November 14th 1993 in Jerusalem, 15 years before the Nobel Prize!
