Former Professor H. Gilbert Welch, an internist formerly at Dartmouth University, believes that the benefits of medical care are exaggerated and that the harms are underestimated or ignored. “The lesson is clear: there is no obvious value to finding breast cancers that are so small they cannot be felt” (Welch 2018). Without access to individualized data, he made numerous assumptions and approximations, which he called a “view from space” to justify his preconceived ideas. In 2018 Welch left Dartmouth University amid charges of research fraud.
