Eugenio Paci

Eugenio Paci

BIOGRAPHY

Professor Eugenio Paci, MD, PhD, Director Emeritus of the Epidemiology Clinical Descriptive Unit at the University of Florence, Italy. He has been an active researcher in epidemiology of population screening for cancer and has authored 158 peer reviewed articles concerning breast cancer screening, several of which were joint publications with Professor Duffy. At the time when treatment was claimed to account for the vast majority of improved breast cancer patient outcome, Paci demonstrated that “Early diagnosis, not differential treatment, explains better survival in service screening” (Paci 2005). Paci has also confirmed that the incidence of late-stage breast cancer decreases significantly after the introduction of successfully organized mammography screening and pointed out the importance of using appropriate statistical analytical methodology with the early evaluation of ongoing screening programs.
