BIOGRAPHY

Dieter Hoelzer, MD, PhD, is a distinguished German physician and researcher whose career has been defined by his pioneering work in acute leukemias. After serving as Professor of Medicine and Hematology, he turned his focus toward collaborative clinical research, founding the German Adult ALL Study Group (GMALL). Under his leadership, GMALL has carried out seven multicenter trials across more than 145 hospitals, driving advances in the treatment of adult acute lymphoblastic leukemia. Building on this success, he also helped establish the European Working Group on Adult Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (EWALL), further uniting specialists across the continent in the fight against this challenging disease. In addition to his research activities, Professor Hoelzer plays a vital role in shaping policy and supporting patient advocacy.

He serves on the Medical Advisory Board of the German Carreras Leukemia Foundation, advises the Society for Hemato-Oncology (SOHO), and contributes to both the Medical Council and the Foundation Board of DKMS (Deutsche Knochenmarkspenderdatei), Germany’s leading stem cell donor registry. His insight and guidance continue to influence clinical practice and strategic initiatives aimed at improving outcomes for leukemia patients worldwide. Professor Hoelzer’s contributions have been recognized with numerous awards.

With over 800 peer reviewed publications to his name and authorship of key chapters in seminal texts -such as the Oxford Textbook of Oncology, the 20th and 21st editions of Harrison’s Principles of Internal Medicine, and the updated ESMO Clinical Practice Guidelines for ALL - Dieter Hoelzer remains at the forefront of leukemia research and education.
